We now have the official confirmation from Apple that the event that is going to take place on January 19th in New York will be about education. The location: Guggenheim Museum.
We still don't know for sure what the announcement(s) will be about, but there is frankly not that much on the list. It will either be about dedicated educational devices or content via iTunes, iBookstore etc. or a combination of both.
Startups like Kno, ScrollMotion and in parts Inkling have proven that the market is ripe for new and innovative ways to serve students and institutions alike. They have also proven that there is money to be made even with digital textbooks, hence it makes sense that publishers are open to discussions with Apple which could provide them with direct access to their customers in combination with a self-publishing platform or other technologies to easily enhance existing textbooks out of the back catalog like Kno has done with its 3D models of chemical structures.
Now, this could play out in two ways for Kno and other app developers in the textbook space. Either Apple is going to announce a close partnership with one of them on the event, maybe even an acquisition, or Apple will pull the rug underneath their feet away with the launch of their own platform.
Either way, the year starts in a very exciting way.
